Electric vehicle charging point guidance for holiday let owners

charging points for holiday homes
  • Do your holiday guests reach your cottage mostly by car?
  • Do you provide parking for them?
  • Until fairly recently there has only been diesel or petrol cars to consider.
  • Did you know that drivers of plug-in cars connect to apps that reveal where charge points are located?

EV drivers use apps that indicate exactly where available charge points are located

You may have thought that the time for providing car charging for your guests was some way off.

Or that drivers of plug-in cars would just be able to find somewhere close by to charge.

Rural areas where most holiday cottages are located still have few if any public charging facilities.

Besides, charging a car can take some time…

So an overnight charge on a private driveway is always going to be the first and most convenient choice for any plug-in car driver.

EV drivers are ‘connected’ to numerous resources and apps that indicate exactly where available charge points are located.

Using a 13A domestic socket is dangerous

EVs are all full battery-powered cars with ranges from around 100 to 300 miles.

To charge any of these cars from a 13A domestic socket would take from 8 hours to over 24 hours.

By which time the plug and socket invariably become more than a little ‘warm’.

Merely trailing an extension out of a kitchen window should not even be considered!

Universal Fast AC Charge Points.

Chargepoints can be either wall or pole-mounted, single or dual-socket and provide different speeds of charge.

EVs require fit-for-purpose fast chargers capable of charging from 15-30 miles of range per hour up to 80 miles of range per hour.

Using a 13A domestic socket and especially an extension lead to charge an electric car is NOT recommended.

How much does a car cost to charge?

  • The average cost to fully charge an EV with around a 100 mile range is about £3.00.
  • You can choose whether to provide the charging facilities as part of your overall rental costs or create a revenue from the usage.
  • There are various charge point options available including smart-chargers with back-office management systems.
  • These can be easily monitored so that you can measure the use and set up different usage parameters for different drivers

  • Key switches can be fitted to prevent unauthorised use, or RFID card, key fob and app operation is possible.
